***************

BOOK 1: The Eat Like a Bear! Jump Start, Digital Version

The Jump Start book teaches the fundamentals of the approach to eating that is driving the success you are seeing in the Eat Like a Bear! community, turning up the success of the website’s “Three-Day Challenge.” It is packed with stories of real people who have adapted the Eat Like a Bear! framework to meet their own goals, stories to inspire you to achieve your goals.

The hardcover and digital versions of the book include the same text. If you currently own the digital version, you certainly can just print it on your home printer (although the print version is certainly extra-beautiful).

The book is packed with inspiration and the psychology to get you started on a path that has been life-changing for many people.

BOOK 2: The Ridiculously Big Salad in Digital

The "Ridiculously Big Salad" Makes the News!

When I was on NBC news affiliate KGET, news anchor Maddie Jannsen was pretty amazed by the ridiculously big size of the bowl I use to eat The Ridiculously Big Salad.

The Ridiculously Big Salad Nearly Broke the U.S. Post Office

For our first batch of 10,000 print books we actually had to fulfill the orders out of our own house. We were lucky to have property big enough to house eleven pallets of books, but we are so remote that we absolutely busted the seams of the tiny little post office. Our main limiting factor was sourcing thousands of priority mail envelopes during a postal supply shortage. (A team of rural postmasters banded together to help us with that.) The secondary factor was what we call "Angela's car." Angela is the rural mail carrier who somehow fit 220 books a day in the compact car you see in the photo below.

Sandy the retired postmaster is now completely retired, but famous in this little postal region among the rural postal network. Angela keeps hauling mail. The book you will receive today is shipped by a family-owned business in St. George, Utah.

The quaint story captivated thousands and landed in the magazine of U.S. Postal Employees, Link.

The Ridiculously Big Salad is its own framework

The Ridiculously Big Salad has an actual, specific framework, a key point that blew my mind since I was really just flying blind all of those months, grinding out the weight loss from 2017 into 2018. I had no intention whatsoever to be here in 2020 writing a book about it all, or leading a mini-revolution among the women on Facebook and YouTube. Heck, I just wanted to be able to walk across my house without limping and to hike with my sons in the forest near our home in California's Giant Sequoia National Monument. My desperation was deep and my goals were basic.

However, for over a year in the early days of the community, I had gotten feedback that people want more specific details about the salad. From that feedback, I holed up in my kitchen weighing and measuring things like I never do (and hope not to have to do all that often) and realizing, by golly, this salad thing really is an actual framework.

I lay the framework out in this book.

The cooking strategies could save a huge amount of time and fuss

More so, there is a specific way I prepare the salads using very basic bulk cooking strategies, to ensure that I always have a 10-minute salad at my disposal every single day that tastes different from yesterday's salad.

The book is laid out according to these bulk cooking strategies: Each week you will bulk cook one or two protein items. You will eat some this week and freeze some. I instruct you how to do so.

Do I need this book if I know how to make salads?

When I started to work on this book, I said to people, "Anyone who knows how to make a salad does not need this book."

I gave an earlier draft to a few core Bear members, all of whom know how to cook and make salads. One of them had been stalled and frustrated. She's an excellent cook. I noticed that despite her skills, reading the book prompted her to implement the strategy with new gusto and she's already down a few pounds as a result.

Maybe sometimes it's not really about the recipe, but about the motivation and inspiration. The book describes why the framework works and why you should try it.

What's in the book?

  • Why, What, & How. Learn the underlying framework of The Ridiculously Big Salad itself.
  • The Greens. How much. Which greens.
  • The Protein on Top. How much. Bulk-cooking strategy and instructions/recipes. Recipes include chicken breasts, ground beef, ground pork, ground turkey, beef roast, pork roast, steak strips, bacon, salmon, boiled eggs, shrimp, scallops, and tuna.
  • The Dressings. Recipes for classic vinaigrette, Dijon vinaigrette, Ranch, coleslaw, Cesar, Italian, creamy Italian, poppy seed, honey mustard, Asian peanut, Asian teriyaki, tartar sauce dressing, blue cheese, Big Mac "special sauce," cilantro vinaigrette, green goddess.
  • Your 6-Week Meal Plan. Each week includes salad plan with shopping lists.

BOOK 3: The Ridiculously Big Skillet in Digital

Because Not Everyone Wants A Salad ...

I was coaching a friend on all of this. She said to me frankly: "Sorry, but I'm tired of salads, and I need something else."

"Why don't you just eat it cooked?" I responded.

She was dumbfounded because, as I mentioned, my own "salad lady" reputation had proceeded me.

The fact is that the Ridiculously Big Salad book had been such a big hit that people thought that was all I ate.

However, from January 2020, when I launched the Three-Day Challenge in the Eat Like a Bear! community, I taught an approach to cooked meals that followed the exact same eating framework of the salad, but the meals were simply cooked instead of raw.

So my point is that this book, too, just like the Ridiculously Big Salad book, is born out of the social proof of this way of eating, from our Eat Like a Bear! community, a community of mostly women over 50 who have always struggled with their weight.

(Already anticipating the question: But what if I am younger and/or have less to lose? Will this still work for me? The older ladies of Eat Like a Bear! jump up and down and say: "Yes! Get started!" ... and some also say, "Do you really think it's harder for you, being young and with less weight to lose? Why are you waiting?")

And Yet, Don't Focus on the Recipes ...

There are over 60 recipes in this collection, and they have driven MASSIVE success. However, our most successful community members are leveraging the benefits of the recipes in a specific psychological context. The whole "not recipe" section of the book – the psychology of implementation – is worth far more than the recipes and is an extremely unique and effective approach to weight loss.

When you do pick up the book, avoid the temptation to skip to the recipes.

Read the whole book.

Take note of these things:

(1) The Framework: The recipes are based on a framework that has proven to be highly effective for weight loss. Having recipes will help you do that, but the recipes are not an end in themselves.

(2) The Embarrassingly Simple Cooking Methods: The recipes come with some cooking approaches that "compete with the drive-thru" in terms of your time spent. These are not gourmet recipes. In fact, the recipes would embarrass legitimate chefs. I do know how to cook and know a lot of gourmet cooking methods, which is why it took me about two years to get over myself and write this book (and make the companion digital course). It's the way most of us cook when no one is watching, and it's a good back-pocket strategy for the long game. (I do always ask: "Who needs to be a gourmet when you can be trim?")

I take a deep dive into both elements and strongly emphasize why simplicity matters in a discussion of weight loss psychology that you likely have not heard outside of the Eat Like a Bear! community, with analyses that come from my social science/social choice background and training.
